Elba is the third largest Italian island and the largest in the Tuscan Archipelago. The island, Situated about 10 kilometres from the mainland, can be accessed by ferry or hydrofoil in circa one hour of navigation. The island has a population of circa 35,000 divided into eight different towns, 12,000 alone residing at Portoferraio. Besides the fact that its perimeter measures only 147 kilometres, Elba is capable of offering a mild climate and a multitude of diverse landscapes and scenery: romantic fishing villages, small towns on rocky hill-tops,ancient castles, green valleys and enchanting bays combined with sandy beaches. Only minutes away from the steep cliffs that plunge into the crystal clear sea,the granite mountain, Monte Capanne rises to 1019 metres of altitude. The ever present evidence of history and culture, combined with an extraordinary wealth of natural beauty, make this magical island unique. Realistically, it’s difficult to find a place as small as Elba that boasts an historical and cultural heritage of equivelant wealth. The history of Elba begins at Porto Argo (the original name for Portoferraio in mythological legends) and continues to the era of the Etruscans whom exploited the island for her wealth of iron only to be expelled by the Romans.Later, Elba was again overtaken, this time by the Medici who intern where obligated to build huge forts around the island in a bid to defend their land from the bloody assults of the terrible saracen pirates. The next important event to mark the history of the island was the exilation of the great French emperor, Napoleon, on Elba.Dispite being only a brief stay,Napoleon’s mark was left and can still be found, on Elba today. Evidence of Elba’s facinating history continues to live in present day and undoubtedly contributes in making this island such an extraordinary place. |
